On January 27, 2026, a significant meeting was held at the farm of Elena Wagyu marking the beginning of a new stage in the development of the Wagyu beef breed in Bulgaria. The event brought together farmers, scientific experts, and Wagyu enthusiasts, united by a shared vision for sustainable, professional, and internationally recognized Wagyu breeding in the country.
As a result of the discussions, a unanimous decision was made to establish the Bulgarian Wagyu Breeding Association, which will apply for full membership in the Australian Wagyu Association – the world’s leading organization dedicated to the Wagyu breed. This membership will provide direct access to international standards, genetic programs, the global Breedplan system for breed development, and best practices applied in the most advanced Wagyu-producing countries.
Key Objectives of the Association
The newly established association will actively work toward:
- The development, preservation, and improvement of the Wagyu cattle breed in the Republic of Bulgaria through the application of modern scientific and breeding methods;
- The organization and implementation of Wagyu breeding activities in accordance with internationally recognized models;
- The maintenance and management of a Wagyu herd book, including the registration and traceability of:
- purebred Wagyu animals;
- recognized Wagyu crossbreeds;
- The establishment of a Wagyu standard, harmonized with international practices and requirements for quality, genetics, and traceability.
Looking Ahead
The establishment of the Bulgarian Wagyu Breeding Association is a clear sign of the growing interest in, and strong potential of, the Wagyu breed in Bulgaria. It represents a step toward higher added value, improved sector organization, and positioning Bulgaria on the global map of Wagyu production.
We wish the association success, sustainable development, and strong international partnerships in the name of quality and professionalism.
