Mayura Station wins grand champion in WBBC 2024

Last night, Mayura Station in South Australia achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Grand Champion title for the third time at the Wagyu Branded Beef Competition (WBBC), making them the first Australian Wagyu producer to achieve this honor. Their entry, a Class 1 Fullblood Wagyu from their Signature Series steaks, scored an impressive 1128 points and was praised by judges for its exceptional juiciness, lasting umami flavors, and silky mouthfeel.

This historic win solidifies Mayura Station’s position as a leader in the Australian Wagyu industry. Their winning entry boasted 60% marbling, a marbling fineness score of 8, and an eye muscle area of 154cm2, setting a new standard for excellence in Wagyu production.

The 13th annual WBBC, hosted by the Australian Wagyu Association (AWA) at the WagyuEdge conference in Cairns, Queensland, featured a record-breaking 66 entries judged by 36 esteemed experts from the food and beef industry. Five classes were contested, ranging from Fullblood Wagyu to Commercial Wagyu Marble Score 5-7, each evaluated on criteria such as visual appeal, juiciness, flavor, aroma, and mouth sensation.

Mayura Station’s win reflects their unwavering commitment to producing the highest quality Wagyu beef, with Scott de Bruin expressing pride in the team’s consistent excellence over the years.

Other notable winners included Andrews Meat Industries’ Shiro Kin steak, Starzen Australia’s Eight Blossom Beef, Stone Axe Pastoral Company’s Margaret River Wagyu, and Jack’s Creek F1 Wagyu.

These champions exemplify the diversity and innovation within the Wagyu industry, each offering unique flavor profiles and culinary experiences. From traditional Fullblood Wagyu to crossbred and commercial varieties, the WBBC celebrates the richness and quality of Australian Wagyu beef on both national and international stages.
